“If I am not for myself, who will be?
If I am only for myself, what am I?
If not now, when?”
Rabbi Hillel
Food and Weight Problems, Eating Disorders
Is Food Your Enemy - and Your Best Friend?
It’s almost as though someone else takes over. A night alone, an argument with your significant other, or no time for lunch because your supervisor wants that report yesterday. There you are, standing in front of the refrigerator, devouring bread and marmalade or buying chocolate chip ice cream. “Never mind,” you say,” I’ll start my diet again tomorrow.” But after weeks or months of depriving yourself of food, and losing weight, back to the old story again! You may be at the mercy of:
- Being constantly on (or off!!) a diet
- Feeling fat, disliking your body
- Bingeing, purging, fasting, using laxatives, or over-exercising
- Overweight and obesity, compulsive overeating
- Going for months - or even years - with very little food
- Feeling inadequate, guilty, depressed, alone, empty, or just different
Worries about weight, your body, and food are caused by an internal emptiness or “Black Hole.” I will help you transform this inner hunger into the “Fertile Void, “ empowering you to find passion, purpose and fulfillment in your life. We’ll explore your goals, dreams and strengths. Beliefs in “not enough” will change to “more than enough.”
My mission is to fight the epidemic of obesity, emotional eating, eating disorders and difficulties with body image. I provide individual counseling and present workshops and retreats for schools, hospitals, churches, agencies, organizations, and professional and corporate communities.
STOP THE EPIDEMIC!
Our schools, homes, and communities in the Bay Area are suffering from an epidemic of eating disorders and obesity.
DID YOU KNOW
- 2% of kids are overweight
- Web sites teach youngsters how to purge and restrict their food
- Girls as young as 4 years old refuse ice cream at parties
- Anorexia has a 10% death rate
- 3.7% of females suffer from anorexia
- 12% of folk with anorexia are now male
- Eating disorders can overlap other addictions
- Seeds of obesity or an eating disorder can be planted in infancy
Our competitive, consumer society with excessive stress and high mobility increases the likelihood of food and weight problems and eating disorders. High-tech use promotes inactivity, and the media pushes slenderness.
Shoshana Kobrin LMFT is on a mission to challenge this epidemic. She offers the following workshops for churches, agencies, hospitals, organizations, and the workplace. Continuing Education Credit is available for MFT’s, LCSW’s and Nurses.
